Wix vs Squarespace - Which Website Builder is Better?

Sep 30, 2019

When setting up a website, you may face the choice between Wix vs. Squarespace website platforms. These two DIY website builders make fast, easy website design available to the common user – but that's not the issue.

What is in question today is which platform will give you the best search engine optimization (SEO) opportunity?

Because let's face it … what good is a fancy website if no one is finding it? So, let's take an honest look at which platform is best for your SEO, and best for your business. We at team Wix SEO Haters may have our own opinion, but here's a chance to decide for yourself.

The Attractive Upside of Squarespace

Squarespace is a relatively new but hard-charging player on the website design front. Your first glimpse of their website provides a cool, stylish, even hip impression. There's definitely some attention paid to style here.

The user experience is equally smooth, allowing you to click through a design wizard that asks you to make simple choices based on your preference of design and features for your website. After a little more than 3 minutes, my website was born. Very clean and quick.

How to Use Squarespace SEO

Now, for the SEO. Squarespace provided a number of SEO entry fields with helpful cues about what information and how many characters are needed. You can customize title tags, meta-descriptions, and URLs for each individual page. The interface features many links to SEO articles and other resources.

All in all, I walked away with an attractive site with an adequate foundation of SEO information. Having a competitive, high-ranking website of course would take some serious research through their considerable article bank.

Squarespace Plans and Pricing

Squarespace provides complete hosting services for your website, which includes a free custom domain registration for annual plans. Four different service levels are available:

 PersonalBusinessBasic CommerceAdvanced Commerce
Price$12/mo - annually$18/mo - annually$26/mo - annually$40/mo - annually

Wix, Fast and Easy

The experience of Wix has already been reviewed by my colleague Ben in the article Wix vs. WordPress so I'll be paraphrasing many of his comments. Wix too offers an easy set-up and design experience though what it lacks in Squarespace's stylishness it makes up for in simplicity.

I built my website in just over 4 minutes, having walked through the set-up wizard and making the simple choices for my website. While it was not an unattractive website, its design left something to be desired. I also had some concerns about the color contrast of certain design elements meeting accessibility standards – which is a definite SEO concern.

While Wix may be among the better website builders for beginners, you will likely have a hard time getting your page to rank highly on Google is going to pose a challenge.

If you're a freelancer looking for a web presence or a photographer starting your online portfolio, this may be a great option for you. Otherwise, you're not going to do your business any favors with your website.

If you're trying to make a choice between Wix and Squarespace in terms of SEO and website design, there are several factors you need to consider. First, know that both website builders will require you to take SEO into your own hands. While they do provide resources to help you accomplish this, they're far from solutions that will create a competitive advantage for your business.

Wix, with its ease and simplicity is well-suited for those just starting out with an online portfolio or gallery to which you can send people links. Squarespace provides you with a few more advantages in terms of SEO functionality, plus it has more sophisticated design capabilities that might position your brand in a better light.
